Understanding Colombia's emergency services gives medical tourists peace of mind. Here's what you need to know about ambulance response, emergency departments, and how the system works for international patients.
Emergency Number: 123
Colombia's national emergency number is 123 — equivalent to 911 in the US. It dispatches police, fire, and ambulance services. Operators may have limited English; if possible, have a Spanish-speaking companion or use Google Translate.
Ambulance Services
Colombia has both public (CRUE-coordinated) and private ambulance services:
- Public ambulances: Dispatched via 123. Response times in Medellín and Bogotá average 8–15 minutes in urban zones. Free of charge.
- Private ambulances: JCI-accredited hospitals have dedicated ambulance services for their patients. If you're a patient at a JCI hospital, your facility can dispatch a private ambulance directly. Faster response, bilingual paramedics more common.
- Medicina prepagada: Colombia's private prepaid health services include ambulance dispatch as a benefit. Some medical tourism facilitators arrange temporary medicina prepagada coverage for international patients.
Emergency Departments at JCI Hospitals
All six JCI-accredited hospitals in Colombia operate 24/7 emergency departments with:
- Full trauma capability
- ICU with advanced monitoring
- Blood bank
- Specialist on-call rosters (cardiac, neuro, orthopedic, general surgery)
- International patient coordinators (during business hours; after hours, ER staff manage with translation support)
